Skeeter Sweeps Bassmaster Classic - Alton Jones Wins Championship - 02-28-2008

Team Skeeter took center stage at the Bassmaster Classic, celebrating its 60th Anniversary in style, with a sweep as veteran angler Alton Jones took home the Championship, and Cliff Pace scoring a second place finish.

Fishing in his 11th Classic, the Waco, Texas-pro came back from 10th place on Day One to claim the $500,000 top prize in the biggest event in bass fishing. “This is the fulfillment of a dream I’ve had since childhood,” he told a near-capacity crowd at the 15,000-seat Bi-Lo Center in Greenville, South Carolina. “My grandfather taught me how to fish, and I wish he could be here to see this.”

As it turned out, Jones’ bag of five bass weighing 13 pounds, 7 ounces was the third biggest in the 25-angler field for Sunday’s final day, and the best among the top seven finishers. His three-day total was 49.7. The Classic victory is the fifth BASS tournament-win for Jones, whose highest previous Classic finish before this year was 7th place in 2000 and 2003.

Skeeter’s Cliff Pace of Petal, Mississippi, pushed Jones the entire tournament, entering the final day in third place, and finishing in second place with 44.5. “I fished one of the cleanest tournaments of my life,” says Pace, who was competing in his second Classic. “But if I had to lose to anybody, it would be fellow Skeeter teammate Alton, for a lot of reasons,” says Pace.

“What better way to kick-off our 60th Anniversary than a victory in the Bassmaster Classic?” says Skeeter’s Senior Vice President/General Manager Jeff Stone. “We are proud of all of our anglers. This is an incredibly competitive group, and we anticipate many tournament victories throughout 2008. These anglers are great representatives of the Skeeter brand both on and off the water,” Stone says.

Skeeter’s Bobby Lane, fishing in his first Classic, held the lead until the last three anglers weighed-in officially. He finished with 42.7, good for fourth place. Another Classic rookie, Clark Reehm of Russellville, Arkansas finished in eighth place with 40.08. “My first Classic was amazing, and I hope to be competing in them for many years,” says Reehm. “This is a great launching point for the 2008 season, and I hope to be as competitive in the Elite Series this year,” Reehm continued.

Jared Lintner of Arroyo Grande, California, finished in 20th place weighed in 33.00. “This was a difficult tournament to fish, and the changing weather conditions forced me to fish outside of my core strengths, and try some different techniques,” says Lintner. “I’m proud to have made it to the final day of the Classic, and excited that a fellow Skeeter teammate won the event, says Lintner.

Todd Faircloth of Jasper, Texas, rounded out the final day of competition, ending in 25th place with 27.08. Faircloth scored the Purolator Big Bass on Day One, weighing in a monster 6.02-pound bass.
