Similar to the 2008 Bassmaster Classic where two Skeeter anglers took center stage, this weekend’s BASS Elite Series “Battle on the Border” on Lake Amistad saw Skeeter’s Todd Faircloth edge out fellow teammate Clark Reehm by just 12 ounces for the win.

Faircloth, of Jasper, Texas, jumped Sunday from 10th place to first, earning the angler $100,000 and moving him into second position in the prestigious Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings, while Reehm moves into third place in the Advance Auto Parts Bassmaster Rookie of the Year standings. Skeeter’s Bobby Lane currently holds the top spot in the AOY race. Skeeter has six top-five finishes in Elite Series events this season.

“Anything can happen on Lake Amistad, and this was one of those occasions when everything went well,” says Faircloth. “It wasn’t until I landed two nice fish on Sunday that I realized I may be in contention for the win.” Faircloth weighed-in a 29-pound, 14-ounce limit on Sunday, including a 8-13 brute which earned Purolator Big Bass honors and an additional $1,000.

Faircloth attributed the performance of his Skeeter boat on the second day of competition during high winds and rough water as one of the reasons for his success. “I think that’s when folks are the most impressed with a Skeeter – when you put it up against the worst of conditions,” says Faircloth. 

Faircloth and the rest of the Elite Series field heads to Georgia’s Clarks Hill for the “Pride of Georgia” tournament, May 1-4. “This win is a huge confidence boost heading into Clarks Hill where I have not had much success,” says Faircloth. “A victory like this allows you to focus on your technique and decision-making, and keeps you from second-guessing yourself.”
