Skeeter’s Kelly Jordon, team captain during this weekend’s Toyota Texas Bass Classic, lead his team to a dramatic victory yesterday on Lake Fork, Texas, with a total winning weight of 228 pounds, edging out Skeeter teammate Bobby Lane by almost eight pounds. Jordon, a former Lake Fork guide who still resides in nearby Mineola, partnered with anglers Lance Vick, David Smith and David Walker for the victory. Jordon pulled in the heaviest catch of the last afternoon at 22 pound, 8 ounces. With the victory, the team earned $250,000 in winnings. “Lake Fork is full of big bass, but this weekend’s event was not easy,” says Jordon. “I only caught seven or eight keepers, and most of our team’s fish were caught in deep water. It’s great to win on my home lake, in front of my family and friends,” says Jordon. While Lane’s team, consisting of angler’s Byron Velvick, Ben Matsubu and Chad Brauer, came in secondplace, Lane landed an 11-pound, 12-ounce lunker, winning big fish honors for the Classic, and earning the Skeeter angler a Toyota Tundra truck valued at $48,000, plus a $6,000 pair of custom-made Lucchese boots. “We did a lot of running around and cranking deep water,” says Lane. “In our best spots, the bass were 22-25 feet deep, and most of the fish were on the bottom or suspended in the tree structure,” Lane added. The event, organized by the Professional Anglers Association (PAA), is designed to encourage and invite fans to be engaged with the pros on a one-on-one basis, while embracing both conservation and environmental stewardship. The PAA was formed to provide a collective voice for professional anglers while offering a competitive environment dedicated to promoting the sport. “This event was designed by anglers – for anglers,” says Lane. “The competition is enjoyable and relaxing, and built around a team format - allowing you to learn different tactics and spend time your fishing counterparts,” says Lane. The Toyota Texas Bass Classic, benefiting the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department’s youth and urban families fishing initiatives, will air as a one-hour special on CBS Sports on Sunday, May 11, featuring highlights from the three-day tournament, with a focus on the final teams and the awards ceremony.
