Local bass angler, Terry Morris of Prosperity, SC, put his site-fishing prowess to work, and recently won the Bassmaster Weekend Series event on Santee Cooper, earning the angler a $5,000 purse. Morris also added 200 points in the standings to qualify for the year-end Championship, and a slot in the prestigious Bassmaster Classic.

Morris runs a Skeeter ZX225 provided by Prosperity-based Martin’s Performance Boating - giving the angler a perfect platform for reaching bass in shallow water shoals, where other boats could not go. 

The March 28 tournament was plagued by adverse weather, including high winds and heavy cloud cover that ultimately cooled and stained the two-lake system. With a lake system whose average depth is only 7 feet and riddled with countless stumps, logs and other hard objects, winds anywhere near 20 mph make the system as dangerous as any body of water could be. Tournament day, however, was blessed with a steady, light breeze that allowed the tournament’s contestants to apply their skills without that distraction.

Morris found his fish to be holding around boat docks and used a 6’6 MH ALX rod coupled with a Green Pumpkin Sweet Suzie to coax his bedding bass into biting. The use of his Power Pole by JL Marine was crucial as to not spook the fish. His 5 fish limit was topped off by one of several six plus pound Santee Cooper Largemouth, a fish weighing in at 6.65 pounds.
